Avyanna's First Day

By: Avyanna Amsel

Avyanna stretched and let her dark raven wings stretch over her bed. With much resistance and a few complaints she eventually got out of bed. Once she was out of bed, Avyanna struggled with her wings for a moment but was able to transform them into her “human” wings which were really no wings at all. Then she got out a piece of paper.

“Let’s see. It’s my first day at the office, which wings will I need? Well, let’s not pick two that way we can have two emergency wings. Then we can have raven, steel, and it’s a special day so we can use glass wings.”

She smiled and scrawled down the wings she had picked. Avyanna felt them become restless and ready to sprout. She quickly focused on human wings and said aloud,

“Please be good today. I need to make a good impression on Mavric.”

Avyanna walked confidently into her small closet. She took out a baggy ash gray sweater and a pair of blue boyfriend jeans. Walking into the bathroom, Avyanna undid her braids and put half her coral red hair into a bun and let the rest hang loose. She tucked her sweater into her jeans and put on a red belt. Finally, Avyanna slipped on her fingerless leather gloves.

Avyanna walked into her kitchen/living room and looked around her nearly empty apartment. Today she would move into Willowsbi Enterprise’s housing and begin her job as the Archivist’s secretary. This was even bigger than her graduation from high school that was only at the beginning of this year.

She had moved out of her home as soon as she graduated because an industry offered her a high paying job in a city that was a decent drive from her small hometown.

Everything was changing ever since Mavric reached out to her with an offer to work as his administrative assistant. She had always enjoyed working with her cousin from her mother’s side.

Avyanna was snapped back into reality by an alert on her phone. The van was here to bring her bags. She quickly gathered up the remaining things she needed into a backpack and slung it on her back. Grabbing her two suitcases, Avyanna struggled to the elevator and managed to hit the lobby button. Once she reached the lobby she immediately noticed two men in black suits near the elevator doors. One of the men had chocolate brown skin and neatly braided dreadlocks. He also had what looked like leaves attached to his hair and a name tag that said ‘Amaranth Davids’. The other man had pale skin that was covered in freckles and his bright auburn hair seemed to have a mind of its own. His name tag read “Irving Afon.”

“Excuse me, miss.” Amaranth said, “Are you, Avyanna Amsel?”

“Y-yes. I am. May I help you?” Avyanna stuttered anxiously.

“I am Amaranth. Mavric sent me to help bring your things to Wiloughby’s housing. Is that all?”

“Um. y-yes.” the other man held out his pale hand and said,

“I can take those for ya’ ”

“Thank you.” Avyanna handed the man the suitcase and then said, “I-i don’t mean to be a bother but was it only you two that came?”

“No need to worry little lady! Mavie sent Miss Phoebe Hildegard. You two should get along great!” The man winked at Amaranth who just shook his head with a small smile.

“Knock it off Irving.” He warned and began walking towards the exit

“O-okay?” Avyanna managed to follow them to the van without tripping. They opened the door to reveal a woman sitting in a white suit and skirt sitting in the backseat.

“Get in before I am late for a meeting.” She snapped. Avyanna was quick to obey and sat next to the woman. The two men loaded up the suitcases and the group was headed off to Willowsbi Enterprise.

“Close your mouth child. This is only the lobby.” Phoebe scolded Avyanna who instantly shut her gaping mouth. The room was extremely large and had many couches and chairs with a few tables so that people could lounge. Phoebe walked straight to the elevators and tapped her foot with annoyance as Avyanna slowly walked as she stared up at the ceiling.

Due to her eyes being on everything in the room, she walked right into Phoebe. Phoebe simply put her hand out and stopped Avyanna at an arms distance.

“Please, watch where you are going and try not to make a mess. We just need to get you your room key and then I will leave you to find your room. “ Phoebe sighed.

  “Sorry! I’m sorry!” Avyanna exclaimed.

The group stepped into the elevator and went to the top floor. They walked down a long hall to a group of offices.

“These offices are just for housing issues. This level also has the hangout rooms and different activity rooms are available on different levels.” Phoebe explained as she walked into one of the offices, “Hello. We need a room key for Avyanna Amsel, the new recruit.”

“I got it riiiiiiighhhhhhht” The woman dragged out the word as she searched the wall of keys “Here!”

Avyanna took the key and thanked the woman.

“I must be off now. Find your room quickly and settle in. At ten o’clock sharp you need to report to your new job. Mavric will then teach you what you need to do.” Phoebe instructed and briskly left the room. Avyanna waved goodbye to the woman and walked out of the office. The office’s numbers each started with 300 so she guessed that each level went up by tens.

Amaranth and Irving had left her bags at the door. Avyanna checked her watch and said aloud.

“Nine o’clock. I got an hour to unpack…Let’s do this.”

She opened the door and looked at the apartment. It was nearly the same as her old apartment. It had three rooms. One bedroom, one bathroom, and a kitchen that was also a living room. The kitchen was only a microwave and a sink that connected to a room that had a bean bag chair in front of a small T.V.

Avyanna beamed with delight when she saw that the bed was round. This was much more comfortable. She often had to sleep with her wings out and it was much more comfortable to let them drape over the edge of the bed. She opened her suitcase and dumped many stuffed animals onto the bed, (almost all had wings).

Avyanna put her fuzzy blanket on the bed and then laid her clothes over the bed. She hung her shirts and jackets in the closet because most had holes for her wings. She put her pants and pajamas into a dresser near the bed. Avyanna was interrupted by her watch beeping.

“Ah! It’s 9:40!” Avyanna grabbed her backpack and left her apartment. After locking the door, she sprinted towards the elevator. Once she was out of the elevator she sprinted out the exit, crossed the street, and into the large building she sometimes visited Mavric in.

Avyanna skidded to a stop in front of a humongous and intimidating set of doors. She paused and took a deep breath before knocking on the door.

“Come in!” Mavric’s familiar voice shouted back.

She opened the door and nearly got squished by a pile of binders that was propped against the door she opened. Avyanna shrieked and leaped right into a bookshelf that nearly toppled onto Mavric who swiftly steadied it.

“H-hi M-mavric… Sorry about the bookshelf….” She giggled nervously.

“Hello, Avy. Welcome to Willowsbi Enterprise.” Mavric shook her hand and smiled.

  “Thank you. What’s my job?”

“You are my administrative assistant so that-”

  “I’m your secretary?”

  “Yes. So that-”

“I have to organize all this!?” Avyanna looked around the room with horror as it seemed to double the size of the lounge and was filled to the brim with papers and books. Mavric laughed.

“No, it’s already organized. You are basically my private gopher. If I need tea, you can fetch it. You will also remind me of meetings and help grab papers and things for me.”

“Oh. That sounds easy. Do I really start today?” Avyanna straightened the pile of binders she had toppled over.

“I will give you a tour and then you will start.” Mavric motioned to the door with an overdramatic bow “After you.”

“Thank you.” Avyanna smiled and walked out the door.

Avyanna landed on her bed with a thud. She was exhausted from the amount of walking it took to just get around Willowsbi Enterprise. She managed to change into a tank top and shorts and let her raven wings finally burst. Avyanna smiled as she remembered her highlights of her day. It had been a good day with only a few bumps. Avyanna somehow survived her first day at Willowsbi Enterprise.
